Description
The Tarpon oil painting is by local artist Blake Masters. Masters is a native Floridian and Panama City resident. He is a self-taught artist who began painting at around age 12. His preferred medium is oil paint and is interested in historical subjects for his work. His inspiration for the Tarpon painting was from a picture that is in the Bay County Public Library catalog, 2-7-5.jpg. The Tarpon was a 130 foot iron hull steam ship which transported passengers and goods on a route from Mobile, Ala., Pensacola, Fla., Panama City, Apalachicola, and Carrabelle. The ship traveled this route from 1903 through September 1937, when it went down in a gale approximately 9 miles off the coast of Panama City Beach. The captain, W. G. Barrow (1856-1937) and crew members went down with the ship in 100 feet of water. The ship remains today as an underwater preserve. Gift of Blake Masters.
