Tarpon Boat The Tarpon oil painting is by local artist Blake Masters. Masters is a native Floridian and Panama City resident. He is a self-taught artist who began painting at around age 12. His preferred medium is oil paint and is interested in historical subjects for his work. His inspiration for the Tarpon painting was from a picture that is in the Bay County Public Library catalog, 2-7-5.jpg. The Tarpon was a 130 foot iron hull steam ship which transported passengers and goods on a route from Mobile, Ala., Pensacola, Fla., Panama City, Apalachicola, and Carrabelle. The ship traveled this route from 1903 through September 1937, when it went down in a gale approximately 9 miles off the coast of Panama City Beach. The captain, W. G. Barrow (1856-1937) and crew members went down with the ship in 100 feet of water. The ship remains today as an underwater preserve. Gift of Blake Masters.

Soldier The Blake Masters collection consists of two framed original paintings by local artist, Blake Masters. The first is titled "U.S.S. Restless Fires on St. Andrews" dated 2003. On December 11, 1863, the settlement of St. Andrews with its thirty-two buildings and Carolina Bayou bridge, was burned to the ground by Union forces. Among the ships was the U.S.S. Restless, depicted in the painting. This attack occurred following the St. Andrews skirmish of March 1863, in which a party of thirteen Union soldiers were attacked by Confederates, injuring nine and killing three. The area around St. Andrews was a vital resource for Confederate forces during the Civil War, for salt production and blockade runners. The second painting by Blake Masters is titled "Turpentine Wagon". The turpentine industry in Bay County spanned from around 1900 to the 1930s, and was an important part of the economy during this period. Turpentine also known as naval stores, was harvested from the bounty of long leaf pines in North Florida, and had a variety of uses, most notably for waterproofing seams and joints on wood boats and ships. Masters used a library photograph as his inspiration for the painting, it is picture number, 157-1-2, title in the library catalog is "Naval Stores Industry." Gift of Blake Masters.
