Digital Objects

For this assignment, you will be using Omeka S to create a small digital collection. You will add and describe 5 objects using Omeka S’s metadata standards (DublinCore, Bibliographic Ontology, and Friend of a Friend). Each item must have a title and description. You must also use one metadata field of your choice to indicate that the object was your contribution.

After adding the 5 items, you will write a short blog post addressing the following:

  1. Which items did you add and how do they relate to each other? Make sure you provide a link to each item.
  2. What metadata fields did you use to describe your items?
  3. Why did you choose these metadata fields? What function does that piece of metadata serve? What information do you want your audience to take from that piece of information?
  4. Address any challenges you faced in describing or selecting these objects. Are there other ways these objects could have been described? What would the impact of that difference be?
  5. Discuss the implications of digital exhibits within the larger context of museums. This is a very broad category, so here is a non-exhaustive list of things you may consider covering:
    1. What new types of audience interaction could exhibits like these facilitate?
    2. What challenges do you see in implementing digital exhibits for museums?
    3. How do you see museums collaborating in light of these new technologies?

Make sure your post is given the category “Digital Objects” before you submit (this will put it in the feed for assignment 1). Submit the link to your post to the appropriate assignment in the Canvas site.
